It’s the time of year when kids are running around in the neighborhood, BBQs are in full force with friends driving over each weekend, and being outside is just the standard. A lot of time will be spent on your pavement, from firework viewing to guests showing up and beyond. If your asphalt driveway is looking a little rough, now is a good time to repair it. The last thing you want is for a guest to show up and scratch their car because of a major pothole, or worse, trip and fall because of large cracks or potholes. Here are some signs your driveway could use some TLC.
A pothole has formed: Potholes are ugly, but there also a safety hazard and can create substantial damage to a vehicle. When a pothole forms, it will allow water to pool. This will eventually seep under the surface of the driveway and soften the foundation. Over time, you will likely start seeing an increase in cracks and other damage. If you only have one or two potholes, you can probably repair them by patching them, but if there are many forming, you may need to replace the entire asphalt pavement. Fixing this problem quickly will look better, be safer for people to walk on, and will save your car.
You notice surface cracking: Some cracks may be a quick fix. If a crack is less than a quarter inch wide, it’ll be easy to fill with a crack filler. You may even be able to do these repairs yourself. Chunks of asphalt are breaking off at the edge: If you notice pieces are loose or they’re breaking off at the edge of the pavement, you will most likely need to remove these areas and replace the asphalt. The edge of the asphalt should always stay intact for draining and safety reasons.
It's stained or faded: Stained and/or faded asphalt pavements are an indication of age, and it’s bound to happen with any pavement. Sealcoating your driveway is one way you can maintain the overall appearance, and if there is no damage except for a faded or stained appearance, sealcoating is a quick and excellent repair. It will also protect it from further fading. Many asphalt driveways should be sealed every one to three years.
Water is draining slowly: Water collecting or pooling on asphalt is never good. If you notice that water sits for a long time and takes a while to drain, if at all, it may be tough to know what to do. Consult Go Pave Utah for help on how to remedy this problem before damages occur.
